1990 Jaguar XJS V12 coupé
Jaguar has recently faced criticism following the unveiling of its new EV concept car, which hints at a rebranding and repositioning. This situation mirrors the controversy surrounding the Jaguar XJS back in 1975. The XJS was a bold departure from anything previously produced at the Coventry factory. Yet, over time, it evolved into a true Jaguar icon, remaining in production for over two decades.

The 1990 Jaguar XJS V12 coupe we have for sale is a California car from new, with just 54.397 mls on the odometre. While it runs and drives, it will require a thorough mechanical recommissioning as well as cosmetic restoration to return it to its former glory.

The body is solid and shows no signs of previous repairs. However, it has been repainted in the past, and now displays various imperfections, including small bubbles, scuffs, faded areas, peeling clear coat, and other blemishes. A full repaint will be necessary to restore its exterior appearance.

Mechanically, the car seems to be in healthy shape. The engine runs smoothly, maintains excellent oil pressure, and the automatic transmission shifts as it should. The coolant fluid is clean. Steering and braking are functional, suggesting the car has received regular basic maintenance. However, after 34 years, a comprehensive service recommissioning is due. Specific issues to address include:

A leaky oil sump pan, with visible traces of gasket sealant. At warm-up, the oil leak reaches the front exhaust pipes, causing smoke in the rear of the engine bay.
Low brake fluid levels upon arrival, likely indicating the need for a brake system overhaul.
Worn suspension rubbers and dust covers that require replacement.
A slow air leak in the left rear tire.
Additional mechanical work will be needed, as this is not an exhaustive list.

The interior is in decent original condition but requires minor refurbishment. The plastic sun visor clamps have become brittle, and the central console cover around the shifter lever has been reupholstered in black leather. Overall, it remains largely intact and presentable.

The car includes two keys: a Tebbe key for the ignition and a conventional key for the boot lid and fuel cap locks. A modern radio has been recently installed, and the original factory booklets are included. The service history is largely unknown, except for an invoice for four tires. A VIN report is available upon request, showing three California owners, consistent mileage progression, and no recorded damage history.

A classic Jaguar with great potential, this XJS screams to be brought back to former glory.
